The YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester is proud to celebrate the remarkable leadership of its Teen Leaders, who are making an impact both locally and nationally. On the national stage, teen leader Rayan Bertini has been selected as one of just two New York State representatives for the YMCA of the USA’s National Youth Advocate Program. This March, Rayan will travel to Washington, D.C., joining teens from across the country to meet with elected officials and YMCA leaders, advocating on national Y priorities and helping shape policies that affect young people nationwide.

As part of his preparation for this important role, Rayan met with Shannon Sullivan, Director of Camp & Teen Services, to discuss the YMCA’s impact in Westchester and how local programs connect to national advocacy efforts. Through these conversations, Rayan gained a deeper understanding of how leadership, service, and civic engagement can create meaningful change in communities both near and far.

Closer to home, YMCA teens are also making a tangible difference in their own neighborhoods. Francis Fokoue-Nkoutche, Charis Choi, and Nathan Beck recently completed their eight-month White Plains Youth Climate Action Project by launching the PureBin, a mechanical recycling bin designed to reduce pollution in the Bronx River. In partnership with the Westchester Parks Foundation, the teens successfully deployed the PureBin this past weekend, immediately collecting debris such as styrofoam and candy wrappers. Their innovative work demonstrates the power of youth-led solutions to environmental challenges.

The group will continue to collaborate with the YMCA and the Westchester Parks Foundation to expand and refine the PureBin project, contributing to ongoing river clean-up efforts and encouraging sustainable habits in the community.

From national advocacy to local environmental action, these teens exemplify the YMCA’s commitment to developing young leaders who act with Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. Their dedication shows how meaningful youth engagement can strengthen communities, inspire peers, and create positive change at every level.
