Putnam Valley Teen Leaders Build Compost System for YMCA Camp Combe
Over the past several weeks, Putnam Valley Teen Leaders have transformed an Earth Day inspiration into a hands-on sustainability project at YMCA Camp Combe. Working together, they designed and built a new composting system that will support more environmentally responsible practices across camp operations this summer.
Inspired by the values of Responsibility and Caring, the teens demonstrated leadership by taking initiative from concept to creation. They researched composting methods, collaborated on design ideas, and worked through challenges as a team. Their effort reflects a commitment to environmental stewardship and a shared belief that small actions can create meaningful community impact.
The new compost system will be used by campers and staff throughout the summer season at YMCA Camp Combe. It will help reduce waste, enrich the natural environment, and serve as a learning tool for young people to understand the importance of sustainability in everyday life.
Y Core Values In Action
As campers arrive this summer, they will see the Teen Leaders’ work in action and be invited to participate in using the compost system. This shared responsibility supports a culture of Caring, Respect, Honesty, and Responsibility while strengthening connections between people and the environment.
This project highlights how youth voice and leadership can shape more sustainable and inclusive communities. The YMCA is proud to support opportunities where young people can achieve, connect, and belong while making a positive difference in their local environment.
We look forward to seeing how this composting system continues to grow as part of YMCA Camp Combe’s seasonal programming. Community members, staff, and families are encouraged to engage with the project, ask questions, and learn together about sustainable practices that protect our shared environment for future generations. Together, these efforts strengthen both people and place. Rooted in YMCA values, this initiative inspires ongoing stewardship and connection.
