The YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester is proud to announce that it has been awarded three $2,000 Cathryn A. Riley Innovation for Quality Prizes from the Child Care Council of Westchester. These prizes will support innovative programs designed to enhance the development and learning of children in our community.
Award 1: SCALED Learning Approach in After-School Programs
The first prize will be used to implement the “SCALED Learning” approach in our after-school programs for children in grades K-5. This approach focuses on the holistic development of children by integrating various elements such as STEM, hands-on arts, literacy, career-connected learning, diversity and global education, and social development. The “SCALED Learning” curriculum recognizes that children’s growth extends beyond traditional academic subjects and encompasses a wide range of skills and experiences, promoting a comprehensive learning environment.
Award 2: “Mad Potters” Gardening Club
The second prize will fund the establishment of the “Mad Potters” Gardening Club for our Yorktown Universal Pre-Kindergarten students. This club aims to increase environmental awareness, promote healthy habits, enhance STEM skills, and support social and emotional growth through gardening. Children will participate in designing the garden, planting, maintaining, harvesting, and cooking the crops. The program will also include learning about seasonal celebrations and nature exploration through food, fostering a connection with nature and encouraging lifelong learning.
Award 3: Partnership with Backyard Sports for UPK Students
The third prize will support the continuation of our partnership with Backyard Sports for our Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) students. Each week, Backyard Sports staff will visit our UPK sites to conduct half-hour clinics that focus on developing various skills through movement, games, and activities. This partnership aims to enhance the physical development and overall well-being of our young learners.
The YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester is dedicated to providing high-quality, innovative programs that support the growth and development of children in our community. We are grateful for the recognition and support from the Child Care Council of Westchester and look forward to implementing these exciting new initiatives.
